What It Takes!!!

Many readers have e-mailed variations of “How can I tell if I have what it takes?”
First, a warning: be very clear not to confuse this question with “How do I know if I will be a success?” “Have what it takes” refers to ability to act. Ability may or may not lead to success.
A story before we dive into “what it takes” vs. “success.”
A young child raised in the rural south dreamed of singing opera. Life just didn’t quite work out that way. But the dream persisted and the self yearned to sing its song. Then, years later all alone in a spotlight on a darkened Off-Broadway stage, sitting on a “boulder” night after night, she sang an exquisite song about the birds in Ireland. The dream was filled. The self was filled. No, not Casta Diva or Lucia’s Mad Scene. But her song. The idea of “success” was not compromised. It was just allowed to change. Let the self dictate the meaning of success. Not money and fame but the joy of the action.
The simple truth is you can’t tell if you have the ability. To repeat what has been said in these articles a dozen times: talent is not the sole element that determines success. You may have enough talent to be an actor, but even great talent cannot guarantee success.
Success is a fickle mistress. There are many working or even wealthy actors who really cannot act. There are many brilliant actors who never get work. The most anyone can say is that there are basics that are usually required in order to be an actor.
If this sounds like hedging, you are absolutely right. Why? Most of us are not going to make the Fortune 500 list by acting. Statistically the odds are stacked against anyone becoming a star, or even making a good living in this profession. Yes, we all know inspiring success-against-all-odds stories. But we know those stories precisely because they are the exceptions.
Wisdom dictates that if there is anything else in the world that interests you, then do that instead of acting. If on the other hand, acting is a passion, something you must do, then you almost have no choice. Let the joy of acting be the payment, if you never sign a million dollar film contract. Money almost doesn’t matter if the passion for the art is a volcano.
After all that tip-toeing, let’s now look at what I personally think it takes to be an actor. (Remember, this is just one person’s opinion.)
1. A GOOD EAR
Yes, to me this is the most important requirement. In order to make a sentence that someone else wrote sound real, an actor must be able to hear what people sound like when they talk naturally.
A good ear will eventually pull you up and whisper, “Hey, that sounds actory. This line needs to be said in a different way.” Yes, yes we all know about dipping inside oneself to search for emotions. But some of the best “dippers” do not sound real.
Sounding real demands a good ear and the good sense to know when what you have said doesn’t sound “right.” The minute a student says to me, “That didn’t sound right,” then I know there is hope that that person has the ability to become a good actor.
2. THE ABILITY TO READ, AND AN ACTIVE IMAGINATION
No, no, no–not read “Pat the Fat Cat” or “War and Peace.” The reading referred to here consists of seeing implications when you read, of seeing what a character is really like–based on evidence from the script, text, book. Learn to read!
Become dedicated to reading the words, phrases, the text and mining them for the gold that is there. Too many times we bump into an unknown word in the script and do not bother looking it up. Too many titles or even the names of characters are not Googled.
Subtleties are lost because a reader/actor without a knowledge of plays, poems, myth, novels, satire, allusions, themes, imagery, language connotations cannot deliver a line with all the undercurrents in his voice. Something as basic as parallels and opposites are missed, leading to misdelivery of a line. The inability to read/understand a line inevitably leads to a superficial line reading. Every day you hear on TV, on film, in rehearsals, in performances, an emphasis on the wrong word, the direct result of not knowing what is being stated in the text. Learn to read. Learn to research.
The very best undergrad training for an actor is to major in English and minor in drama. Your advanced courses in literature will both teach you about people and about feelings AND teach you how to read the undercurrents of what is not being written. Poetry will heighten your sense of language and rhythm, two essentials for an actor. The imagination, loosened by lots of reading, then helps you to see new possibilities in the meaning and delivery of a line in a script. Reading for implications, reading beneath the surface, stretches the imagination.
3. THE ABILITY TO HANDLE REJECTION
Depression, rejection, and insecurity reign in this profession. We do not get up every morning and have a secure job to go to. Some people thrive on that freedom and luxuriate in that insecurity. Most of us don’t.
So we need to have or to be taught to find a still, solid, total belief in self. Ego. Confidence. Self-assurance. Presence. Call it what you wish. But to survive we must have some shield to protect us from the constant rejection. The difficulty is to stay in touch with the inner self while protecting that inner self from attack in the form of rejection.
We have written many times of the need for energy, joy, vitality–all these find their roots in a solid ego. That ego, that belief in self, is the third element in the triad which determines if one has what it takes to be an actor.
GRAB BAG REQUIREMENTS:
These are almost self-explanatory, but deserve mentioning.
Be reliable (on time for appointments, interviews, auditions, rehearsals).
Be responsible (memorize your lines).
Learn to control your temper. In other words, be pleasant in spite of…
Don’t be “high maintenance.”
Take care of your health.
Eat and sleep properly.
Get out of relationships that drain and destroy. If your parents are sore spots, get over it.
If there are physical things about yourself which you don’t like, fix them or learn to live with them gracefully. Get in touch with your intuition and learn to trust it. Get good training and if the class or teacher makes you feel awful, get out of it!
Surround yourself with people who have hope and happiness.
Develop the traits mentioned above and you increase the possibilities of being a success because you have what it takes.
Well, as the great American philosopher Porky Pig said, “That’s all, folks!” Now who would have thought a stuttering pig would become a star????

Audition Tips

The Arrival

First audition tip: Bring something to do. Do a crossword or read a book. Anything that occupies your full attention.

Why, you ask? Because you're usually stuck in a room with other actors who are there to audition, just like you. One of them is going to start a conversation. Either because they're nervous, or they want to make you nervous.
Listen, I'm all for networking with other actors. It's a great way to find work. But at an audition, keep to yourself and stay focused.
Also, reading a book will prevent you from pacing the hallways and reciting your lines. Don't do that either. It will only serve to jitter your nerves. And besides, if you don't know your lines by now...

How to Memorize

Speaking of your lines, do you know how to memorize them? One of the best audition tips I can offer: Your lines should be so ingrained into you, that you could recite them in a coma.

First Impressions

Here's a good audition tip: When you walk in the room, be confident. The human brain makes over 27 judgments about another person within seconds of meeting them. These judgements are based on your posture, body language, voice tone, breathing rate, eye contact, etc.
Make a bad first impression, and everything you do thereafter is filtered through that impression. (Called a cognitive filter.) You'll smile and they'll think you're afraid and nervous.
If you make a good first impression, you'll smile and they'll think you're relaxed and confident.
Why is this important? Because acting is a business. And people do business with those that they know, like, and trust.

The Auditors

The powers that be. The folks behind the desk, in the dark, eating their sandwiches, drinking their coffee, smoking their cigarettes, and taking their notes. All the while, ignoring you.
When I walked in the room, I used to think I was at their mercy for two minutes. Now I walk in and think the exact opposite. They're atmy mercy for two minutes. I can make 'em laugh, cry, or at least yawn. Whatever the case, I'll be having fun.
A little known audition tip: Think of them as potential business partners. Equals. You're selling, and they're buying. Treat them with respect and courtesy, and they'll do the same.
But don't ask who they are. Introductions waste time, time you could use for showing off your acting chops.
And don't use them in your monologue. (Unless they ask.) They're there to observe and evaluate, not engage.

The Room and the Space

I've auditioned in all sorts of places. Living rooms, kitchens, rooftops, you name it. But typically, it's either in a theatre or a studio space.
Wherever it is, there's usually an X on the floor, done with tape. Find it and go stand there. That's called a mark. (X marks the spot.)
Why? Because the auditors get antsy when you're too close. (I had a professor in college who would throw a pen at you if you came too close to the table.)
But don't stay rooted to that X. Remember, the space is yours for two whole minutes. So feel free to move around.

The Slate

Another great audition tip: After you hit your X, tell them who you are. This is called slating. There's the good slate, and the bad slate.
The Bad Slate: "Hello, my name is so-and-so, and I'll be doing Viola from Twelfth Night."
Boring! Imagine how many times a day the auditors must hear that. It'll go in one ear and right out the other.
The Good Slate: "Good evening, I'm so-and-so and this is Viola in the first act."
That has class and distinction. Or what about this? "Hi everyone, my name is so-and-so and this piece is from Twelfth Night."
Now they're listening! (Just remember to keep it simple.)

The Time Limit

If you prepared a monologue or a song, you (usually) get two minutes starting from your first line. And two minutes is plenty. (In fact, the auditors will have made their decision in about 30 seconds.)
So as to be respectful of everyone's time, cut down your monologue or song. Rehearse with a stopwatch to measure how long it is. Then when you get to the audition, you won't be rushed.
And if they cut you off, don't take it personally. It doesn't mean you're bad, it means they're renting by the hour.

Eye Contact

Actors love to stare. Especially in auditions. They think it makes them look ultra-concentrated on their scene partner. The end result looks like someone who might be slightly deranged. And who wants to hire that?
One of the best audition tips on making eye contact is the 90/10 rule.

The Bottom Line

These little audition tips & tricks took me years to collect. And they can make or break your audition. Follow them, and you'll be light years ahead of the competition, and so much closer to becoming anactor.

Why???

WHY

Modelling / Acting as a career :

With apperent astounding growth in film, television and fashion industry a career in modeling/acting has become not only the most exiting but also one of the most lucrative careers. It can offer fantastic opportunities, especially for people who love to travel the world and meet diverse & interesting people. But before starting out it's important to be aware that today modeling is a highly competitive industry like any other field, and success can only be achieved with certain vital ingredients: dedication, a professional approach, a good agency to represent you and hard work. You also have an option of being a part-time or a full-time model.

Why do you need an Agency to represent you?

If you are a start up in this field it is possible that you may not be aware of the exact functioning of this industry and might also not have great contacts within the industry. Remember, that competition for work is fierce and standards today are higher than ever. That is why you need a professional agency to represent you in a right way, at the right time and to the right people in this industry.

Even experienced and established models require a professional agency to represent him/her in this industry. Agency helps you to find appropriate assignments and explore new opportunities. We have been doing this in the finest way for lot of experienced models and actors.

An agency introduces you to all the major production houses as a model/actor and helps you to appear for the major castings which suit your abilities and strength. As an agency we not only help models get work but also handle your finance as a model, your dates and your modeling career.

We even advice freshers and guide them on all aspects of a modelling/acting career, including casting process, grooming, self-presentation, personal styling, exercise, diet, health and personal care.

-------------

How does an agency function?

Agency keeps track of all the major casting happening in the industry and sends its models to most appropriate casting. Appropriate casting for a model is one where they fit-the-bill i.e. where the requirement is exactly of his/her looks, skills and abilities.

We start with meeting you and having a friendly discussion with you about the possible future as a model with us; we understand your needs and evaluate your abilities. We then shortlist you for all the assignments which suits your needs and abilities. We inform you about those Castings/Auditions and give you all the details like the production company, the product (in case of a TV commercial), what kind of character is required, the exact location of casting/auditions, dress-code for auditions and timings for you to appear for the audition (remember, you need to turn up on time).

We take special care when you are a fresher :

Why does Agency need you?

We earn a % of total remuneration that a model gets for all the assignments you do through the agency.

Why do you pay Registration and Artiste Manangment Charges upfront?

Any business needs investments and nothing comes for free. instead of schmoozing you, we are very clear that if we are spending our resources, we need to be paid for the same. hence, if you want quality, pay for it.

Why does Agency need freshers?

Being fresher in this field means you are Fresh. With so many films being made, new products being launched and new satellite channels coming, there is an ever increasing demand for new and fresh looking talents. In our daily casting processes we are asked by our clients to search new faces for their products or films or serials. That is the reason why we need new people whom we can professionally represent as models/actors.

How to appear for Casting/Auditions?

When agency calls you to inform you about any casting that means you fit the bill for that casting.

First and foremost thing is to note down all the details like the character requirement, dress code for casting, location, timing and contact persons name.

Always go in the exact dress code that was mentioned to you. Turning up on time is the most important thing. If due to any reason you can't make it on time, always inform the agency so that they can in turn inform the production people.

Be professional with the production people, have a positive attitude and greet everyone concerned at the casting. Listen to what they have to say and prepare the script, if any. You can take your time to prepare the script but taking too long is not advised.

Do not take friends along for the casting (in case of kids, parents can go inside the casting room). Try to create your network by chit chatting with colleagues at the casting but do not talk loudly.

Always start your audition with your brief introduction (your name, contact numbers, your height, your passion and experience, if any). Our agencies casting director will always be preset at the casting to guide you through the casting process.

Can I join other Agencies?

Yes you can. We do not have an exclusive contract with you; hence you are free to join other Agencies. Other professional agencies may also charge a processing or a technical fee.

When do I get a feedback after an audition?

The selected talents are informed within 7 to 15 days of the audition.

Does H. R. give any guarantee or assurance of assignments?

No. Casting and Talent agency represent talents, using its best endeavors, through Picture Profiles, Website, Emailers, Casting book, etc. but can not guarantee a selection for any assignment. Selections are done by the Production Houses / Ad Agencies or Brands and depends on multiple factors like looks, talent, match with the character required etd.
